Sea transportation is probably one of the most economical ways of shipping dangerous goods internationally. For safety reason, all dangerous goods (e.g. flammable gases/liquids, oxidising agents, toxic/corrosive substances. etc.) must be properly classified, packed, marked, labelled, stowed and segregated in accordance with the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. Furthermore, dangerous goods training for shore-based personnel has became mandatory since 1 January 2010. The latest amendment of the IMDG Code (i.e. amdt 34-08) requires shore-based personnel involved in the handling, packing, transporting, storing, etc. of dangerous goods to receive training so as to familiarise with the general provisions of the IMDG Code. Refresher training for the trained personnel is also required in view of periodical changes in regulations and practice. Personnel are encouraged to attend the IMDG Code training to ensure compliance to this mandatory training requirement.
